More times than not, addiction catapults the idea of discretion directly into the “moot” category. And so it is with caffeine addiction. We are not so much concerned about where we score our next hit, so long as we score it as soon as humanly possible! I am willing to bet, however, that Melburnians are more capable than most of exercising at least a shred of fleeting discretion when it comes to coffee, as we pride ourselves on being members and supporters of one of the biggest caffeine-fuelled cultures in the world. As such, the next time you feel the pull towards your favourite coffee creation – be it a long black, flat white, latte, cappuccino, batch brew, filter or the humble single or double espresso – find your way to Supernova Coffee Company and find it quickly.

Located at 1/701 Glenferrie Road, Hawthorn, behind Readings bookstore, Supernova Coffee Company is a cosy, warm, clean and bright space which welcomes you with the promise of amazing coffee and equally as amazing food. Opened in 2018 by owner Patrick Zhang, Supernova will wow you with a variety of beans roasted by local roasters Symmetry, as well as with their fusion-cooking focus that combines modern Asian cuisine with classic Western staples. Each week, an “exceptional and unique coffee” is on offer. These coffees boast being the result of the carbonic maturation process, a process that creates deep fruit flavours, rich mouth feel and length. Think Ethiopian Sidamo Areka. It sounds exotic, and it tastes amazing! As well, customers are treated to weekly offerings of single-origin filter brews and batch brews. At the time of the writing of this article, the weekly batch brew, for example, consisted of Yirgacheffe Hafursa natural. In other words, the batch brew and filter coffees are next level.

As mentioned previously, coffee is not the only jewel in this café’s crown. The food will send you reeling, no doubt. How do truffle scrambled eggs, house-cured salmon and spicy Thai beef salad sound? Add to that mushroom risotto, a breakfast burger, the Royal Beef Burger, the Southern fried chicken burger and an extraordinary version of French toast containing lemon curd and a Tim Tam soil, and all bases are safely and extravagantly covered. Supernova has considered the indecisive, as well, with their jaw-dropping Supernova Board consisting of a side portion of the following: house-cured salmon, roasted truss tomato, fennel pork sausage, smashed avocado, pumpkin fritter, wild mushrooms, sautéed spinach, bacon, small orange juice and hollandaise sauce on two poached eggs. The menu also caters for those wanting vegetarian, gluten-free and dairy-free fare. Oh, yeah, did I mention that muffins are baked in house daily? Well, they are. Supernova aims to please. Regardless of your wants, needs, requirements and/or sense of culinary adventure, the super-friendly staff will ensure that your visit will be a satisfying and smile-inducing one.

If you still yearn for more after your cup and plate are empty, then luck be with you. Supernova has been known to offer brewer masterclasses, the most recent one of which was presented by the 2019 World Brewers Cup Champion, Jia Ning Du, or “Douzi” as she is affectionately known. As well, Supernova stocks the latest and greatest Sttoke cups, the world’s first shatter-proof ceramic reusable cup. A proper and reliable, as well as stylish, takeaway vessel is a must-have for any legitimate coffee head. Agreed?

NASA defines a supernova as “the explosion of a star, the largest explosion that takes place in space”. Get yourself to Supernova Coffee Company and experience their explosion of taste, care and meticulousness – it’s the brightest star in the Hawthorn café scene.
