Racing season is upon us again, and with so many events taking place around the Peninsula, you don’t need to travel to Flemington to join in the fun. Here are some of our top picks to add to your November social calendar.

Oaks Day

Over the past five decades, Oaks Day – also known as Ladies Day – has become one of Melbourne’s most anticipated spring racing traditions. The fact that it holds the fastest growing crowd records of the entire racing calendar is a testament to its popularity, and the event’s Fashions on the Field competition is always a favourite.

Dromana’s Jetty Road Brewery is hosting a ladies’ lunch for those keen to celebrate Oaks Day in style. On Thursday, November 7, women are invited to gather their best friends and head along between noon and 4pm for an afternoon of food and fashion. The grazing menu will feature tasty treats such as scallop ceviche, prawn skewers, caramelised onion tarts and charcuterie and cheese platters. All guests receive a glass of sparkling rose upon arrival, and there’ll be a showcase from Rahona wines.

It will be a wonderful event for women to frock up, get together and socialise with others for a relaxing day that celebrates the race, without all the fuss of being there,” says Jetty Road’s events coordinator Nicole Pitrun.

Entertainment will include live music and a ‘Fashions on the Field’ runway, courtesy of a local boutique. Attendees are also encouraged to embrace their inner fashionista, with prizes for best dress, best fascinator and best heels. Tickets cost $35 per person and reservations can be booked online.

Stake’s Day

Melbourne’s Spring Racing Carnival always concludes with Stake’s Day, traditionally held the Saturday after the Melbourne Cup. St Andrew’s Beach Brewery is planning a big celebration for the carnival’s final day – a perfect match, because before the venue was a brewery, it was home to some true racing greats.

The 92-acre property belonged to horse trainers the Freedman brothers, two prominents members of one of Australia’s racing dynasties, and hosted famous names such as Makybe Diva, Subzero and Mummify. In 2013, Andrew Purchase bought into the property and introduced co-owner Michael Freedman to his vision of turning it into a one-of-a-kind brewing company. Today, hops, apple and pear trees grow where a racetrack once stood, and the former training facilities house a brewery and beer garden.

For Stake’s Day, the venue will offer its very own ‘Birdcage’ – an exclusive sports bar that punters can buy tickets to. There’ll be a free drink on arrival, cocktail-style nibbles, and a DJ on the decks. In true Peninsula fashion, the style of the day will be relaxed, with more of a beachy feel than traditional suits-and-frocks racing garb. The event runs from noon until 6pm, with tickets costing $55 per person (available for purchase here). Only for those aged 18 and over.

Mornington Race Day

If attending the races in person is more your speed, or if you’d like to witness the spectacle up close for the first time, then consider buying tickets to Mornington Race Day on November 18. Held at the scenic Mornington Racecourse, it promises to be a fun day full of entertainment and excitement.

If you really want to make a day of it, there are dining packages available for Gunnamatta Restaurant, a trackside restaurant that offers excellent views as well as gourmet food. They’ll be serving up a spring-themed menu on the day. Otherwise, pack a picnic basket and simply enjoy the alfresco atmosphere instead.

Tickets cost $10 per adult, or $8 for concession if purchased online. Children under the age of 16 attend for free. Alternatively, tickets can be purchased on the day at the gate for $15. If it’s your first day at the track, make sure to read the venue’s dress code before heading along.

Kay & Burton customers can receive free general admission by entering the code GAKAB at checkout. Offer limited to 100 tickets.
