The subject of facials is intriguing: there are those who would never miss a monthly appointment, and consider their facialist as a therapist; those who deem them an unnecessary indulgence; those who binge on them during overseas holidays.

For those on the hunt for dewy, hydrated and radiant skin- here is a hit-list of Melbourne’s best facial treatments from the industry insiders and their international clientele. Opinions won’t be so divided after one of these experiences.

Melanie Grant

1208 High Street, Armadale

If there is such thing as a ‘facialist to the stars,’ Melanie Grant is it. She is also Australia’s only Official Skin Expert for Chanel, and splits her time between Sydney, Melbourne, LA and Paris, where her four salons are located. From a young age, Grant was fascinated with skin health, and started out concocting her own remedies from ingredients found in the refrigerator. Now a busy working mother, her self-described approach combines ‘old-school skincare sensibility with clinical know-how to deliver the best results.’ She uses a carefully curated selection of products including Chanel, Sisley and Biologique Recherche, as well as a range of technologies. Many swear by her light therapy treatments, and she counts high-profile models and fashion editors like Karolina Kurkova, Phoebe Tonkin and Nicole Warne among her regulars.

James Vivien Dermal Therapies

580 High Street, Prahran

The beaming beauties who work at the headquarters of skincare brand Mecca have tried and tested literally thousands of products and treatments between them. Their verdict on Melbourne’s best facial? James Vivien Dermal Therapies. Known for his abilities to plump, calm and brighten skins of all kinds with non-surgical techniques, Vivien’s approach is ‘to enhance natural beauty and protect our most delicate organ’. Products used are selected based on the efficacy of specific ingredients rather than brands, and include Medik8, CosMedix and Société. Carolyn Cresswell affectionately calls Vivien ‘Jesus’ for the miracles he is able to perform on her skin, and Lucy Folk attributes her fresh and radiant complexion to frequent visits.

Herbario

222 Chapel Street, Prahran

Do not be fooled by the humble facade, demure branding, and low-key Instagram account: Herbario is perhaps Melbourne’s best-kept secret. Since 1977 this holistic health boutique run by Valli Shubere and her husband Vito Cozza has offered herbal remedies, nutritional therapies and exclusive skincare treatments that have attracted a cult following including film, fashion and beauty identities from around the world. All products applied are prepared in-house using botanical ingredients. Methods have been described as unconventional and occasionally uncomfortable- but the results undeniable, and the experience completely unforgettable. Needless to say they’re heavily booked, so be sure to phone up with a flexible diary.
