Autumn on the Mornington Peninsula is a special time of year and with more people flocking to the region to enjoy local holidays, family-friendly venues and experiences are in high demand.

Look no further than Green Olive at Red Hill, a family-run business offering a whole farm experience.

Owners Greg and Sue O’Donoghue and their expansive family – children Sam and Sophie, two kelpies, two maremmas, a Shetland pony, free range Isa Brown chooks, Wiltshire Pole sheep and a handful of Indian Runner ducks – have created a warm and welcoming place to share tapas, sip wine or coffee, relax and experience farm life. It is also their home.

You can catch a glimpse of their stunning residence down the end of the driveway, beyond the vines, dam and grazing sheep.

“Our friends say we have an enviable commute to work and we can’t argue with that.”

Be warned, Green Olive will fuel the desire for a lifestyle change.

The beautiful 27 acre property is located an hour from Melbourne, between Port Phillip and Western Port Bays in the renowned wine growing region of the Mornington Peninsula. The rich volcanic soil and cool climate is the ideal place for growing quality produce, including five varieties of olives, grapes, herbs and vegetables. A hops paddock has recently been planted to add locally brewed beer to the O’Donoghue’s repertoire.

Sharing tapas in the garden at Green Olive is an absolute delight, surrounded by the kitchen garden and overlooking the rolling lawns, vines and dam. The all-day farm menu includes hand-made lamb sausages and meatballs, free-range egg and garden vegetable frittatas, dips made with herbs and veggies from the garden, seasonal soups and salads, farm fresh rhubarb dessert and other tasty dishes inspired by seasonal produce, which is picked daily.

Green Olive is a firm favourite with families – both local and visiting. As well as a family friendly menu, the property includes an in-ground, fully fenced trampoline and a playground to keep the little ones occupied. Activities during the school holidays are regularly organised, including a ‘Kids Farm Tour’. The tour gives children the opportunity to meet and feed the animals, collect eggs and discover where fresh food comes from.

Shopping is also on the agenda, with olives, oils, chutneys, relishes, jams, sauces, wine and natural body products all made from produce harvested at the farm available to take home. Adults can take in a cooking class, a food and wine experience, picnic or a sustainable farm tour.

A concerted effort has been made to employ sustainable practises on the farm and in the business where possible. Rain water is collected and stored, farm irrigation is from the dam which collects water from the natural spring, compost from green and kitchen waste is re-used in the garden and power is generated from photovoltaic panels on the farm store roof.

During their seventeen very busy years cultivating the farm, the O’Donoghue family has established a vineyard; built a farm kitchen and store; launched farm classes, tours and tastings; created a farm brand of food, cordials and wines; sourced useful kitchen products and inspiring cook books and branched out with body care products.

With a passion for agri-tourism, sustainability and the whole farm life, Greg and Sue have established Green Olive as a successful business and a destination to relax, taste, celebrate, play and learn.
