“The name above that door is not mine, but my father’s. Italianality, filtering Venice through a unique Australian expression, has been my way of continuing along that proud personal path.”

Located at 45 Spring Street in the CBD, opposite Treasury Gardens between Collins Street and Flinders Lane, a unique and inspiring space beckons the curious to experience what may be termed “Italianality”. Italianality is the expression of an ethos supported by the pillars of food, art, lived experiences and philosophy. Specifically, Italianality is a vision that bridges one man’s Australian identity with his Italian counterpart. As such, this imagined, creative and curated space is a fulcrum of sorts, encompassing all of the associated energies that have preceded it. The resulting culmination – a culmination that includes all aspects of Italo-Australian history, culture, sense of place and heritage - is enlivened by a hyper-vibrant dynamic that represents the next step along a very personal and organic continuum of challenges and notions. Welcome to Di Stasio Città, and welcome to the world of its founder and spiritual leader, Rinaldo Di Stasio.

Città buzzes with an inconceivably high frequency. An eclectic sense of anticipation permeates the air. In other words, it is very emotionally rich and abundant. A commercial venture, most definitely; however, Città simultaneously seizes the opportunity to extend and celebrate the Di Stasio dream that includes Rinaldo’s personal influence on the Australian hospitality, cultural and artistic landscape. Moreover, this celebration highlights the beauty and diversity of Melbourne and the CBD, where the Di Stasio brand seed was planted, as well as Rinaldo’s beloved familial home, Italy. At Città, you will be submerged in a living and breathing staging ground of art, design, architecture and ideas. You will have the pleasure of appreciating a diverse range of humanity as expressed in music, literature, film, painting, photography and shared celebration. Needless to say, Città is an establishment like no other. It must be experienced to be believed.

Despite the ethereal nature of the aforementioned discussion, make no mistake, Città is first and foremost a restaurant, a restaurant capable of stepping into the ring with any of Melbourne’s high-end eateries and holding its own. It provides an arena in which unique vision of hospitality, food and drink is brought to life. Now is the perfect opportunity to casually peruse its menus. The Best of Di Stasio menu is a 5-course prix fix offering that includes cocktail canapes, baked scallops with seasoned crust, handmade pasta with crab deluxe, veal with prosciutto, sage, white wine and salad(or potatoes), all topped off with an apple puff pastry served with a sensory-overloading calvados cream. If the stomach is incapable of accepting an additional entry after the fourth course, a signature cocktail is available as a replacement. Moving on to The Classics menu, which offers both a la carte ordering as well as a 3-course prix fix option, one will be utterly delighted to find hearty and traditional Northern Italian fare. Think Appellation Oysters, served either naturally or classically baked, Carpaccio Crudo Classico (raw sliced beef with rocket and parmesan), Linguine Capri (prawn linguine with parsley and lemon), Lasagna Pasqualina (a simple yet mouth-watering version containing tomato, mozzarella and basil), Risotto Milanese (saffron-infused risotto), Brasato Di Manzo (slow-cooked beef with polenta) and Pollo Arrosto (roasted baby chicken). The grand finale incorporates three dessert powerhouses – a white chocolate, mascarpone and pistachio torta, dark chocolate mousse and the tried-and-true tiramisu.

To conclude, here is a quote from the very pioneer and visionary from whom Di Stasio Città has evolved. “The name above that door is not mine, but my father’s. Italianality, filtering Venice through a unique Australian expression, has been my way of continuing along that proud personal path.” In what direction this path continues is anybody’s guess, but it suffices to say that it will be one imbued with tradition, creativity, appreciation and an unquestionably satisfying meal. Città is open 7 days a week, 11:30am till late.
