Scandinavian design is a unique design movement which emerged in the early 20th century in the Nordic countries of Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden and Denmark. As a result, “Scandinavian design” is often used interchangeably with the term “Nordic design”. Regardless of semantics, this design movement is characterised by simplicity, sustainability, functionality and minimalism and is guided by seven primary principles: muted colours, natural lighting, modern furniture, de-cluttered space, wood accents, greenery and an overarching less-is-more approach. Scandinavian design celebrates both the natural world and the human-made world, resulting in a warmth of space and the hopeful reminder that the two worlds can, in fact, coexist in perfect harmony, that humanity is very much a part of the natural order, not separate from it.

Inquiries and feedback are both welcomed and encouraged.

Finally, it is worth mentioning a brand that succinctly and wholesomely sums up the ethos of Nordic design and hence, of Designstuff, as well. That brand is Iittala. It started off as a glass factory in Iittala, Finland in 1881. Currently, the brand honours generations of essential objects that have been created to enrich the average person’s everyday life. Building on a tradition which favours objects that are simultaneously distinctive, combinable and multi-functional, Iittala products embody lasting designs that inspire individual use and expression. Because Finnish culture values quality, aesthetics and functionality, Iittala champions and celebrates design that lasts a lifetime, plainly and simply. Progressive design heroes Kaj Franck and Alvar Aalto – think the organically shaped glass vases – continue to inspire the brand to this very day, keeping it forever relevant. The company clearly describes its raison d’être: “We don’t just create beautiful objects. We believe in timeless design that will never be thrown away.” This is beautifully simple, sustainable and oh-so Nordic. If you are unfamiliar, allow Designstuff to introduce you to the world of Iittala. This introduction may just be the beginning of your own personal design story.
