While COVID-19 has presented some upsides for some people, such as time to slow down with loved ones and/or time to dedicate to creative pursuits, the big beneficiaries have definitely been our four-legged friends. Happy hounds have been enjoying more walks than their little legs can sometimes take, and our feline friends have lapped up the constant “Stage 4” 23/7 companionship within “their” homes.

Our partners at The Pet Concierge have highlighted a couple of other very important ways in which we should take care of our fur friends to help the entire family remain healthy and happy. And if you are worried about how your companion is going to adjust when “normal” life resumes, The Pet Concierge can help maintain the lifestyle and TLC to which s/he has become accustomed.

Firstly, pets feel terrific when they are trim. It is always important to keep an eye on their waistlines, but this is especially true now when, like their carers, their waistlines might be experiencing some COVID-19-related expansion. Variety is the key to a healthy diet. A diverse diet will not only be more enjoyable for your companion, but it will better meet his/her nutritional needs over time. When determining the best available food option, meat and a named meat meal, like chicken meal or lamb meal, should always be listed before any grains. Our dogs and cats are designed by nature to eat protein from meat sources as opposed to grains.

Food allergies are a rising concern with pets, and it seems like more and more of them are suffering from allergies. A food allergy is the over-response of your pet’s immune system to an invading protein. Unfortunately, every time the food is consumed, the immune system over-response becomes greater. If your pet presents signs of being unwell, you need to work with your veterinarian to determine (a) whether your dog’s symptoms are the result of a food allergy and (b) if they are, that you try an elimination diet until you can determine its cause.

Pets are vulnerable to bacteria and pesticides, partly because they’re always on the ground, so it’s important to always keep your home clean and hygienic by using pesticide-free environmentally friendly cleaners. It is important to store food properly in airtight containers and, if wet, in a refrigerator to avoid bacterial growth that occurs at room temperature. It is also extremely important to wash your companion’s bowls - frequently and thoroughly - including water bowls, particularly self-filling water bowls, in which bacteria flourishes. Don’t stop here, though. A 2006 study showed that even after a rigorous hand wash with soap or a trip through the dishwasher, 67% or more bacteria remained (Weese & Rousseau, 2006).  As such, Dr. Jessica Vogelsang (aka Dr V), renowned veterinarian and author, believes that we should disinfect our pet’s bowl once a week.

Despite Stage 4 restrictions, your pet still needs to visit a vet on a regular basis. If you are not comfortable taking your pet to the vet, The Pet Concierge can step in and manage this process for you. Moreover, they can offer you and your pets a wide range of services every day of the year, including:

  • Pet feeding. If/when you need to go away, The Pet Concierge will visit your pets to feed, walk and cuddle them in the comfort of their own home.
  • Dog walking. For busy people that are at work during the day or otherwise unable to walk their dogs, The Pet Concierge can offer regular and occasional dog walking. They pride themselves on individual walks; they don’t do group walks because your pooch is their number one priority!
  • Puppy visits. Do you have a new fur baby, perhaps? If so, The Pet Concierge can be there to do the extra feeds and cuddles when you can’t be.
  • Boarding. If you would like your companion to be in a loving home-away-from-home environment, The Pet Concierge’s boarding service is perfect for you. They will mind your pet in the comfort of a home-stay environment. Your pet will be treated as a treasured member of the family, sleeping inside, with access to a fully secured grassy backyard and 24-hour care. Pick-ups and drop-offs are available too.
  • Pet taxi service. Pet Concierge can chauffeur your pet to the vet, groomer or anywhere else s/he needs to be.
  • Pet errands, including food pick-ups and deliveries, are available.
  • Grooming
  • Dog training
