Aesop skincare has achieved a special kind of status, especially in its motherland of Australia. Thanks to their emphasis on botanical-based ingredients alongside an aesthetic to match, the brand has become a homewares must-have, as well as a high-end body, skin and hair care range. Just think of how many open-for-inspections you’ve been to where a bottle of Aesop hand soap in its distinctive, apothecary-style packaging has sat on a bathroom vanity next to a matching moisturiser.

What is today a skincare icon has its roots in leafy Armadale. In 1987, Aesop founder Dennis Paphitis owned a salon in the suburb and would offer his clientele his handmade hair care products, which made generous use of plant-based ingredients.

Encouraged by his clients’ response to the products, Dennis began studying with scientists to learn more, soon expanding into skin and body products as well. From this origin story, the company grew and grew, and more than 20 years after its beginnings, Aesop opened a signature Armadale store in the heart of High Street.

Dennis himself designed the Armadale shop in conjunction with Melbourne architect Ryan Russell of firm Russell and George, responsible for a number of Aesop stores. Though small, it packs a punch thanks to the use of colour, materials and texture. The walls and ceiling are painted in varying blue-green hues, creating a soothing atmosphere, while a pale timber benchtop grounds the space in the brand’s signature earthy style. Neat rows of jars, bottles and pumps line shelves around the room.

Visitors to 1057 High Street will notice that the shopfront doesn’t jump out at you; that’s the brand’s philosophy. The space selected by the Aesop team is a heritage Victorian building like most other stores along the strip, though it has been painted a chic black. With an emphasis on sustainability, Aesop’s style is to fit into locations that already exist and become part of a neighbourhood’s established fabric. Drop by in person and the Armadale team will be happy to offer advice on what products will best suit your needs.

Winter skincare tips

This time of year is unquestionably harsh on skin. Cold winds and indoor heating can leave skin dehydrated and in need of some specialised TLC tailored for the reason. Suzanne Santos, Aesop’s chief customer officer, explains:

‘Just as we change our apparel when the season turns, the skin on the face, neck and décolletage, too, calls for a different approach,” she says. “We wrap our bodies in coats and scarves to ward off the cold; so, too, should we add extra layers to our faces.”

We asked Aesop for their best tips to keep skin healthy and glowing this winter. Here’s what they suggested:

Cleansing

If your skin feels tight and dehydrated after washing, consider turning down the water’s temperature. It’s tempting to have extra hot showers this time of year, but this can disrupt the skin’s surface. Tepid water and drying softly with a gentle towel is preferable.

If you’re seeking a facial cleansing product, try Aesop’s Purifying Facial Cream cleanser, which features lots of nourishing fatty acids plus Vitamin E, and their Tea Tree Leaf exfoliant to polish and soothe skin.

Hydrating

Our skin’s surface barrier can often become damaged during winter, thanks to biting winds and dry heating. This can leave lips chapped and skin feeling flaky. To provide a hydration boost, Aesop representatives suggest a rich moisturiser, like the Camellia Nut Facial Hydrating Cream, which blends nut and plant extracts for extra antioxidants. Using a facial mask can help too. Aesop has a Blue Chamomile Facial Hydrating Masque that can be applied twice a week. A quality lip balm packed with vitamins can soothe sore lips – try this Rosehip Seed Lip Cream.

Get a glow

If your skin looks dull during winter, getting plenty of sleep and eating a diet with lots of nutrients and antioxidants will help. In terms of topical treatments, Aesop’s Perfect Facial Hydrating Cream uses botanical butters, oils and Vitamins C and E to encourage a healthy glow, and their Damascan Rose Facial Treatment delivers a concentrated dose of fatty acids and vitamins.
